Where It All Began

Starships RPG traces its origins back to 2004, when a browser-based text MMORPG called Starships! launched on this very domain. Developed by Rabid Panda Ranch under the direction of a game developer known online as Tejas, the game offered players the chance to command their own starships in a persistent online universe. Written by a professional game creator with over 25 years of experience in the industry, Starships! was designed from the ground up to deliver a deep, rewarding space simulation experience entirely through text-based gameplay.

Players who signed up for Starships! found themselves at the helm of a vessel in a vast galaxy filled with opportunity and danger. The core gameplay loop revolved around three pillars: mining, trading, and battling. Miners could navigate to asteroid fields and extract valuable ores, which they then hauled back to space stations for profit. Traders specialized in buying goods at low prices in one star system and selling them for a premium in another, carefully calculating fuel costs and risk along their routes. Combat-oriented players outfitted their ships with weapons and shields, hunting pirates or engaging in player-versus-player skirmishes across the frontier.

A Thriving Community

At its height, Starships! attracted over 100,000 registered players. The community was vibrant and active, with players forming alliances, establishing trade networks, and competing for control of contested star systems. Forums buzzed with strategy discussions, ship-fitting guides, and role-playing stories set within the game universe. Many veterans of that era still remember the camaraderie and the thrill of logging in each day to see what had changed in the galaxy overnight.

The game ran successfully for several years, evolving through multiple updates that added new ship classes, expanded the star map, and introduced additional gameplay mechanics. Tejas and the small team behind Rabid Panda Ranch were known for their responsiveness to the community, frequently incorporating player feedback into new features and balance adjustments.

From Game to Resource Hub

As the original game wound down, the Starships RPG site transitioned into something new: a resource hub for fans of space-themed role-playing games in all their forms. Drawing on the deep experience gained from designing and operating a large-scale online RPG, the site began publishing guides, reviews, and articles covering everything from classic tabletop systems like Traveller and Stars Without Number to modern sci-fi board games and play-by-post communities.

The philosophy behind Starships RPG has always been rooted in practical knowledge. Every guide on this site reflects real experience with the games and systems being discussed. Whether it is advice on running a sci-fi campaign, a comparison of starship combat mechanics across different rule sets, or tips for worldbuilding a believable galactic civilization, the content is written by people who have spent years at the gaming table and behind the screen.
